Greetings Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Fulbright Elementary and your child's third grade class! I am looking forward to a fun-filled year of achievements with my students. Open communication, positive attitudes and a willingness to learn are vital keys to working and growing together.
We will be reading and writing every day in class. A class newsletter will be written each week, providing you with class news, spelling words and any upcoming activities.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me anytime. Sometimes I am unable to check my class phone messages daily, so please leave a message with the office if it is important. If there is a change of transportation for your child, send a written note addressed and dated to me personally. A great way to communicate with me is through email.

Parent Teacher Folders
Every day your child will bring home his/her blue folder (purchased from the office). Please check the folder nightly for homework, graded papers, notes, or important information. Please make sure the folder returns to school each day, so that your child has it to bring their things home in the next day. All homework MUST be returned the very next day to get credit! Homework must include the child's name, all work completed and colored, and parent signature.

Student Arrival
Students will be able to enter the classroom at 7:35. If they arrive before 7:35 they must sit in the hallway and are supervised by an aide. The tardy bell rings at 7:40! Please make every effort to have your child to school on time. If your child is tardy they miss valuable instruction time, get behind on their work, and disturb the learning environment. If your child arrives after 7:40 they must obtain a tardy slip at the office before coming to the classroom. Tardiness will prevent your child from earning perfect attendance.
Attendance is crucial …. direct instruction, guided reading lessons, etc are difficult to make-up. I do understand that sometimes an absence is necessary. All make-up work will be placed in your child's mailbox. You may call the office to make arrangements to pick up the work at your convenience. If it is a planned absence, I request you obtain the work when your child returns. Please return all make-up work within 3 days!

Supplies
It is important to your child's learning that they have the proper supplies in order to complete their assignments at school. I will try to send a note home if I notice your child needs supplies.
Crayons, glue, and “J” tablets are the important staples necessary in our classroom. Our school supply cart comes to our room every morning and is stocked with basic supplies. You may send money for your child to purchase what they need.

Visitors
All visitors entering the building must report to the office before going to the classroom. Visitors are asked not to interfere with the teaching process, nor request a conference while the students are in the classroom. I do encourage you to visit our classroom so you can see learning in process!

PTA
I encourage everyone to join PTA and be involved in the many activities they provide for our students. Our PTA does so many great things for our school, children, and teachers! Our goal is to have 100% of the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. join PTA for our class. If you choose to join, please make sure your memberships get credited to our classroom. Our PTA is phenomenal!

Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader Program is at Fulbright. This is a reading program that encourages children to read a book then take a test on it. The tests are on the computers throughout the school. If your child takes a test and answers 60% or more of the questions correctly, your child will receive points based on the length of the book and its reading level. Your child needs to 80% or above to promote good comprehension.
The children are "STAR" tested in the library at the beginning of the year to determine their "independent" AR reading level. All of the tests are done independently. They will be retested in January and then again at the end of the year to note their progress.
PLEASE NOTE this program is not part of your child's grade in reading. It is a fun program to encourage reading. Not all children are able to begin this program at the same time. Please be patient and let your child love reading and books! Read to your child EVERYDAY! Have your child read to you EVERYDAY! First graders begin to accumulate points at the start of the second semester. Each nine weeks children who have earned points and have a 70% average or above will get to go to the "AR Store" and purchase things with their points. An Accelerated Reader award will be given at the end of the ear … this is a great way to motive your child to read!

Book Orders
Throughout the year I will send home Scholastic Book Orders. This is a great (and cheap) way to build your child's personal library. Also, for each book ordered our class earns points which allow me to buy more books for our classroom library! Please make your check payable to Scholastic Book Club. DO NOT SEND CASH!
I hope this letter helped answer some of your basic questions. Please feel free to contact me for any further questions you may have! Again, I look forward to spending this year at Fulbright doing all I can to help your child reach their greatest potential!
